Veterans' Bill of Rights and Office of a Veterans' Ombudsman Cited as Government Accomplishment by Globe and Mail
July 22, 2007

Yesterday, the Globe and Mail listed the creation of the Veterans Ombudsman and Veterans’ Bill of Rights as one of the top accomplishments of Canada’s New Government. It was an honour for me to spearhead this initiative and pass the act in February of this past year.

As Chair of the Standing Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, I am proud to have helped create a Veterans Ombudsman and Veterans’ Bill of Rights to help veterans deal with the often complex process of obtaining disability pensions and various services administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Through the work of myself and the committee I hope to exemplify my passion for the issues effecting the men and women who have served our country. This recognition shows our ability to work together with members of other parties to get things done. The tabling of this report (that led to the creation of the Ombudsman and the Bill of Rights) is a true testimony of how parliamentarians can work together to get things done for the men and women who served our great nation.

I will continue to work hard for veterans to ensure that their needs are met and that they are treated fairly and properly after so proudly serving our country.
