Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada
June 24, 2009
Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today on the occasion of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day: “June 24 is a very special day for the Québécois and for French-speaking Canadians who recall the efforts made throughout our history to preserve the French language and the rich cultural heritage that goes with it. “Our country would not be the same without the French fact. This vibrant language is a true asset to our great nation, as it enriches our lives and allows us to expand our horizons and exchange ideas with our friends in La Francophonie. “I would like to extend my personal best wishes and those of the Government of Canada to everyone who, on this 24th day of June, is commemorating the long and proud tradition of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day. “This celebration reminds us that the French language is an integral part of Canada’s history. I wish each and every one of you a happy Fête nationale!” |
